Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave C64
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android
A true spiritual sequel to Bubble Bobble!
For the first time in 39 years, Bubble Bobble on Commodore 64 receives a true spiritual sequel.
Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave brings the legendary fan-made arcade hack Lost Cave from 2012 to the C64, featuring 100 brand-new levels originally designed by TAITO as extra content for the console versions — now carefully adapted for Commodore’s beloved 8-bit machine.
Built upon the technical foundations of Bubble Bobble Remastered, this project represents its natural evolution and completion. Thanks to extensive reverse engineering and custom tools developed internally, it finally became possible to recreate Lost Cave on C64 with a level of accuracy and respect that was previously unattainable.
What to expect
- 100 new levels from TAITO's console ports of Bubble Bobble, faithfully adapted to the C64 engine
- Level layouts recreated with arcade accuracy in mind
- Carefully reproduced bubble airflows within C64 memory limits
- Gameplay adjustments to better fit the C64 game engine
- Selected new bonus items straight from the original console versions
- Optional Two-Button Controls (jump on Button 2), just like the arcade
- Remastered visuals, fully consistent with Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered
- A slightly tougher challenge that rewards strategy, skill and experience
- A pay-what-you-want fan-made project, created by fans, for fans
A faithful adaptation
Due to the original C64 engine’s hardcoded limits, some elements — such as certain hole shapes or airflow granularity — could not be reproduced exactly. Where needed, levels were carefully adapted to preserve gameplay and challenge, without altering the spirit of the original design.
The result is the closest experience C64 players have ever had to a true Bubble Bobble sequel.
A collaborative effort
The adaptation was made possible thanks to the invaluable collaboration of Andrea “Bisboch” Babich, co-creator of the original Lost Cave project, who provided complete level data and personally verified the accuracy of the C64 conversion.
Technically speaking
Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave is a hack of the original C64 version of Bubble Bobble, not a from-scratch rewrite of the game, featuring fully redesigned sprites and backgrounds. The new graphics, directly converted from the arcade version, offer greater detail and fidelity to the original look and feel, while being optimized for both CRT and modern monitors, to offer the best possible experience on real hardware end emulators alike.
Development Status
v1.0a
Fixed a two-button control issue when playing on real hardware with two players simultaneously.
Important Notes
⚠️ Avoid unofficial / trainer versions
Please be aware that trainer or cracked versions of the game available on CSDB contain known issues and may exhibit incorrect behavior that is not present in the official release.
For accurate gameplay, proper behavior, and support, please use the official version published here, which is a free, respectful update to the original 1987 conversion, and tested on real hardware.
Unofficial versions are not supported and any reports or complaints related to unofficial versions cannot be taken into consideration. Thank you for your understanding.
⚠️ Two-Button Control & SID Compatibility on Real Hardware
The Commodore 64 relies on the SID chip to read the paddle inputs. The second joystick button is wired to pin 9 and is detected via the POT X signal.
If you experience issues with the second button, your system is likely using a SID replacement (such as SwinSID or similar) that is not fully compatible with the original SID’s handling of paddle inputs.
This is not a bug in the game. Any C64 software that reads the second joystick button through POT inputs will exhibit the same behavior on such hardware.
For proper control functionality, an original SID or a fully compatible replacement is recommended.
⚠️ PAL System Required
This game is a hack of the PAL version of Bubble Bobble for Commodore 64 and is designed to be played on PAL systems only.
Running the game on NTSC machines or NTSC emulation may cause issues such as inconsistent or incorrect game speed and audiovisual glitches.
For the intended and optimal experience, please play the game on PAL hardware or use a PAL-configured emulator.

On the page it says this runs on Android. Can I play it on an android phone?
hi you obviously need a C64 emulator. The best Android C64 emulators include C64.emu (high accuracy), Mobile C64 (user-friendly), and GEKKO C64, mostly supporting .d64, .t64, and .prg files. These apps offer on-screen joysticks/keyboards, with many available on the Google Play Store or directly as APKs to turn your phone into a Commodore
Absolutely loving this! Bubble Bobble Remastered was a little contentious, as it took an already great C64 game and just made little tweaks. But this, taking levels from other BB releases and building them into a C64 release as a sequel of sorts - a level pack, really - makes perfect sense.
We're also playing it for the current Lemon64 monthly competition!
glad you enjoy! Very very happy it made it to the Lemon competition, thanks for the heads up! I still don’t understand how Remastered can be considered “contentious “ and the almost entirety redesigned graphics “little tweaks”, though. To me it makes all the difference between not playing Bubble Bobble on my C64 anymore and enjoying it again as it was 1987 all over again. But to each their own I guess. I love revamped classics. Also if it weren’t for Remastered, then there wouldn’t be Lost Cave.
Jeez man, I was paying you a compliment. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
No hard feelings at all. I was just sharing my perspective, the same way you shared yours. Again, glad you liked the game and thank you for the heads up regarding the compo!
Awesome release. It's made the Lemon64's Game Competition already.
Games Competition 2026 - Round 2 - Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave
thank you for your support and the cool news!
Awesome and worthy sequel to one of the best games on the C64 ever, even if that doesn't make it a new game. We really liked the new graphics. Our German-language review can be found at 00:58:11. English subtitles are also available. Subscription to our YouTube and Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂
thank you!
Hey there, congrats on the new game. I have placed it in January's best homebrew games video here:
A review of this will be forthcoming in Zzap!64 issue 31...
Really nice! Now for your next project: Bubble Bobble - 3 players - introducing BAB, the female dragon. 😊
Woah, that would be awesome, but I think there's no option to plug more than two joystick to commodore ;)

And oh - one player could use the keyboard! :)
Yeah. And then already to the next project, called "Bubb-innen Bobb-innen", which is for 4 players, introducing "Bebb-innen" the genderless dragon. ;-) *lol*
Hello, in my last issue of Retro News Flash, I covered the game Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave and ran a short report on it. It´s a really great game, I really liked it. All the best from Magisthan´s Spielekiste. 🙂
thank you very much!!
Hey there, I am happy to say that your game has been placed into the best C64 homebrew games of January 2026.
Awesome thanks!!!
It's great to have new levels for a great game. I added them to my video along with other games released in January.
thank you!
In my opinion bub and bob need a small speed upgrade....
Brilliant
thank you!!
Thanks for the shoutout man - and thanks to anyone else involved in making this conversion possible. You rock <3
We are not worthy! :D
By the way, an unexpectedly hard part of this project was retrofitting your very due credits in an already crowded title screen! XD
Thank you! :) Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave (2026, Dave’s Retro Forge)
can i use the amiga mini game pad for 2 button play?
Brilliant - thank you for this and here is my tribute...
Thank you!!
Woooooooooooooowwwww
there isn't solo sound fx guys.. pls add the option . thx :)
great work, grazie mille!!
Nothing better than playing this masterpiece on a real breadbin
awesome setup👍🏻
Awesome game!
thank you saberman!!
Wooooooohooooo - time to play :)
stuck on lvl 43....no idea how i can complete
You have to go up by bouncing on the bubbles. A technique already required in several levels of the original Bubble Bobble, so if you finished that one you definitely have done it before.
HELL YEH!! https://www.indieretronews.com/2026/01/bubble-bobble-lost-cave-true-spiritual_25...
I got a full review and an interview with David about this game out on my channel in a couple of days :)

The page is online, but the game not yet here... Damn! Looking forward to it!
Woo Hoo, more ways to steal points from my big sister, erm, I mean, enjoy co-operative fun gameplay. My C64U will not arrive soon enough (bites fingernails)
Thank you! :-) Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave – Coming Soon!
Now that ~20.000 people have bought Commodore 64 Ultimate - how about two SIDs mode!? Music + SFX at the same time...
OMG that would be so good. Let us hope devs will push the new C64U to its limit, in tyhe mean time, thanks to the new wave of devs for these amazing games .
making good use if the new C64U is a really nice idea, having said that, Bubble Bobble C64 has been playing sfx along with music since 1987. I don’t know why some people think otherwise
Gotta admit that I just saw a message somewhere stating that the game had either music or SFX, not both, didn't check myself... :) Waiting to get my C64U, then I'll check out your remaster (and hopefully this, too)...
I hope you get your shiny new C64U real soon! Enjoy it😃👍🏻
Me too! Just ordering ARM2SID, and bought Bubble Bobble C64 Remaster yesterday... This is going to be awesome! :)
The C64U is capable of 8 SIDs. Why 2 when can use 8?
I kinda had the impression that old Ultimates support just 2 SIDs and thus the base for 2 SIDs would be bigger than C64U 8 SIDs, but now I'm questioning that idea... But true, if C64U and 8 SIDs is the new baseline then go for 8 SIDs!
The all-time classic for every community gathering at our "Retro Gaming Day" in Wuppertal. We're already looking forward to the review in our next livestream. Stay tuned and follow us on Twitch! 🙂
