Localization and Authenticity: Why We Chose ‘Dō’ Over ‘Cuirass’

When I first started building Yokai Idle, I used standard RPG terminology. I had 'Cuirasses,' 'Greaves,' and 'Gauntlets.' It was functional and easy to understand, but as the world of Yokai grew, these Western terms started to feel like they belonged in a different game.

To truly immerse players in our setting—inspired by the historical eras of Japan from Jōmon to Muromachi—we made the decision to transition our item names. A 'Cuirass of Earth Power' became a 'Dō of Earth Power.' It's a subtle change, but it shifts the entire aesthetic of the player's inventory.

The Armor Translation Guide

  • Dō (胴) instead of Cuirass: The iconic chest armor that defines the samurai silhouette
  • Suneate (脛当) instead of Greaves: Splinted shin guards that feel distinctly Japanese
  • Kote (籠手) instead of Gauntlets: Armored sleeves that protect the forearms and hands
  • Kabuto (兜) instead of Helmet: Emphasizing the unique neck guards and crests of Japanese headgear
  • Kogake (甲掛) instead of Boots: Reflecting the reality of armored foot coverings worn over tabi

One of the biggest challenges was handling weapons that don't have a 1:1 Western equivalent. For example, while 'Spear' is a fine translation for 'Yari,' using the Japanese term allows us to distinguish between different types of polearms, like the Naginata, which would otherwise just be grouped as another generic spear.

Weaponry Parity

  • Yumi (弓) – Capturing the unique asymmetrical design of the Japanese longbow
  • Tsurugi (剣) vs Katana (刀) – Distinguishing between ancient straight double-edged blades and the curved medieval blades
  • Nageyari (投げ槍) – A more thematic take on the Javelin, literally meaning 'thrown spear'
  • Tate (盾) – Large standing shields used for fortifications rather than handheld bucklers

By using terms like 'Dō' and 'Suneate,' we aren't just adding flavor; we're teaching the player about the culture that inspired the game. It makes the 'Divine Stone' or 'Jōmon Shell' you find feel like they belong to a specific time and place.

I still include the English descriptions and hover-tips to ensure new players aren't lost, but the primary names now reflect the soul of Yokai. It’s no longer just a 'Steel Plate'; it's a piece of history.
