Böast - A Game of Exaggerated Pride (Playtest)

Play it online now via https://playingcards.io/ by using the attached pcio file.

Böast is a card-combination party game for 3-6 players. Each round, players secretly build an outrageous boast from three cards -- a Deed, a Witness, and a Reaction -- and the Skald judges the best one.

"I lassoed the sun -- before the Sky God himself, who had set the price as a joke -- and they still drank it."

Fast, loud, and deeply silly. A complete round takes about 2 minutes. A full game takes as long as you want it to.

How to Play

  • One player is the Skald each round (rotating left after each judgment)
  • All other players secretly choose one Deed, one Witness, and one Reaction card from their hand
  • The Skald reveals each combination and reads it aloud in full
  • The Skald picks the winner -- most outrageous, funniest, or best constructed
  • First to 7 points wins the title of Greatest Skald of the Age

This is a playtest build

The decks currently contain 112 Deed cards,  86 Witness cards, and 89 Reaction cards drawn from Norse, Celtic, West African, and Chinese mythology. The game is playable end-to-end now.

Feedback welcome - card combinations that fell flat, ones that became instant classics, and anything that felt broken or missing.

A Note on the History

Böast draws on three real traditions: the Old Norse heitstrenging (a public oath sworn before witnesses at a feast), the sumbel (a ritual drinking ceremony in which boasts were made before the hall), and the Celtic curadmír -- the champion's portion, claimed by whoever could make the best case that they deserved the best cut of meat. The cards are not historically accurate. The spirit is.
